Pregnancy stimulates a lot of change in the body. Knee pain is a common symptom experienced from those changes.

Typically, knee pain during pregnancy is nothing to worry about as there is extra pressure on your joints from the extra weight.

However, there are other causes of knee pain during pregnancy. The matter gets worse when your pain turns from mild, to irritating and debilitating.

Let’s discuss some primary reasons for knee pain during pregnancy:

Primary Reasons Why Your Knees Ache during Pregnancy

  • Hormonal Changes

As you proceed to your third trimester, an increased amount of hormones is released to loosen up tendons and pelvic ligaments in preparation for childbirth. This also triggers looseness in other tendons and ligaments, including around the knees.

  • Weight gain

Weight gain is the one of the most common factors contributing to knee pain. During the nine months, the weight gain exerts strain on joints and ligaments.

  • Pressure On Veins

Similar to a rise in pressure on your joints and ligaments, strain on the veins in your knees brings about discomfort in the knee.

  • Excessive Walking, Standing or Workout

Knee pain can sometimes occur if you walk excessively, stand for a long time or exercise too much during the pregnancy. You’ll develop pain because your knees will be forced to carry the weight for a longer time.

What To Do?

If your knee pain is persistent despite self-treatment, you should consult a specialised orthopaedic surgeon for further investigation.
