Does Kinesiology Tape Really Work?

Have you seen people walking around with different colored tape on their legs and wondered what it is? Well, it’s probably kinesiology tape, a type of therapeutic tape that is meant to provide support without restricting motion.

Kinesiology tape is effective because of how much it is able to stretch. Unlike other types of medical or athletic tape that restrict movement, kinesiology tape is composed of cotton fibers combined with elastic material. This ensures that it is elastic enough to provide support but not so restrictive that it limits the range of movement of the user.

How Does It Work?

Muscle tension or pain is a result of overexertion over a period of time. This causes inflammation which leads to an additional strain on the muscles. Kinesiology tape helps alleviate this pain because it is able to create a tiny fraction of space between your skin and the structures under it. This lift releases the pressure building up on the muscles, thereby decreasing irritation or pain.

Who Can Use It?

Kinesiology tape can be used to treat injuries and support weaker areas such as the ankle joint, knee joint or iliotibial tract. In some instances, it can be used to improve the performance of certain muscle groups, depending on how the tape is stuck on.

However, it should be noted that using kinesiology tape alone is not by any means a sole method of treatment. In fact, it garners results when used in conjunction with physiotherapy and strengthening exercises. The use of kinesiology tape is recommended in consultation with a doctor who can demonstrate the accurate application over areas that require additional support.

Some common instances where kinesiology tape is used include the following:

1. Plantar fasciitis

Pain brought about by the overloading of connective tissue on the plantar surface of the foot, resulting in heel pain of varying intensities.

2. Swelling

Superficially injured joints that may be slightly swollen.

3. General muscle pain

Muscles that are sore from overexertion.

It is helpful to remember that kinesiology tape should not be used as a substitute to medical treatment. In the event that you have been injured and are in pain, please consult with a specialist.
