Running Through 2020

Once again, marathon season is upon us. If you have spent the last 12 – 20 weeks preparing and building up your weekly running mileage, then you must have known this. For the uninitiated or those new to running, welcome to the marathon fraternity. 

Whether you are a seasoned runner, eager for a new personal challenge, or even if you are just tenaciously trying to stick to your New Year’s resolution of leading a healthy and active lifestyle, then this list might just be perfect for you.

Here we have rounded up 5 different and exciting marathons that you should have on your radar. So grab your running shoes, what are you waiting for? 

1. Terry Fox Run

For the 10th consecutive year, volunteers have come together to organize this marathon from which all donations and pledges go towards supporting cancer research in Singapore.

This run carries on Terry Fox’s hopes of a cancer-free world. As an added advantage, this year, in support of environmental sustainability, runners are encouraged to bring their own water bottles to avoid using single-use plastics.

Date: 22nd March 2020 at the Angsana Green, East Coast Park.

There are 2 noncompetitive categories:

a.    5km fun run

b.    10km fun run

2. Safari Zoo Run 2020

A slightly different marathon to participate in is the Safari Zoo Run.  This marathon is in remembrance of Ah Meng the resident Sumatran Orangutan of the Singapore Zoo that passed in 2008.

Unfortunately, this year will be the 12th and final year this marathon will be taking place before it goes on a break as expansion works to the Singapore Zoo commence. There is no better time than now to seize an incredible challenge and to run a marathon along wildlife as well as experience the Night Safari in the day.

Date: 29th March 2020, Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Safari.

Competitive categories include:

a.    Safari zoo challenge 12km

b.    Safari zoo duo dash 2km (1 adult above 13 years and 1 child 8–12 years)

c.    Safari zoo junior dash 2km (1 child 8–12 years and 1 junior 4–7 years)

Noncompetitive categories include:

a.    Safari zoo walk 4km (1 adult 13 years and above)

b.    Safari zoo walk 4km (1 kid 3–2 years)

 3. OSIM Sundown Marathon 2020 

The OSIM sundown marathon started as Singapore’s first night time marathon back in 2008. This marathon attracts an international crowd of running enthusiasts and saw approximately 30,000 participants last year. This year, the theme is Fitness for All and it aims to include everyone regardless of their physical or intellectual disabilities.

Date: 23rd of May 2020 at the F1 Pit Building.

There are a few categories that are open to both men and women including:

a. 5km Kids/Youth (4 – 17 years as of 23 May 2020)

b. 5km Adults (18 years and above as of 23 May 2020)

c. 10km Challenge (13 years and above as of 23 May 2020)

d. 2.1km Half Marathon (16 years and above as of 23 May 2020)

e. 42.195km Full Marathon (18 years and above as of 23 May 2020)

4. Ground Zero Run #runforhumanity

Mercy Relief is a non-government organization (NGO) in Singapore that aids survivors of disasters. Apart from raising funds for their efforts around the region, the Ground Zero marathon is designed to illuminate the struggles faced by survivors immediately following a disaster. Participants can run this marathon by carrying a bag of rice in the ‘race against time’ challenge to recreate the conditions survivors face.

Date: 19th April 2020 at Marina Barrage.

Categories include:

a.    10km race against time

b.    5km relief and challenge

c.    Kid’s dash

5. Run for Hope

The Four Seasons Hotel Singapore and the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) team up to organize a marathon that advocates for cancer research. Since its debut in 2008, this has been the largest marathon run in support of cancer research in Singapore. The funds raised are disbursed to support cancer research grants. So if you are looking to further science and to do some good while running, then look no further.

Date: 16th August 2020 at Marina Barrage

There are only 2 categories in the Run for Hope:  

a. 3.5km Fun run/walk

b. 10km run
