Fascia is connective tissue that wraps around all the internal structures in your body. It allows for movement of muscles alongside organs and other structures without causing friction.
The entire human body as a whole is the culmination of different systems working individually yet cohesively. While fascia may exist around all the internal structures of our body and prevent friction, it could also lead to increased muscle tension.
Muscles Soreness
Muscle tension occurs when your muscles are unable to fully relax and remained contracted state for a period of time. The longer this tension goes on for, the more pain you will feel in that region.
Therefore, if the fascia in the region of a particular muscle is restricted, the muscles of that region will also be restricted which leads to myofascial pain.
In order to combat such pain, all we have to do is incorporate some stretching into our lives to free up the little bundles of fascia that have clumped together and restrict the movement of our muscles.
A foam roller helps to rid your muscles of all their tension and tightness, enabling you to relax. It is a type of self-massage that helps you alleviate tightness in the areas you most need relief. Once you get your hands on a foam roller, try out some of the following steps and you’ll find yourself well on your way to relaxation station.
For the neck
Lie on the floor with the foam roller under your neck, while slowly turning your head in either direction,
For upper limbs
Depending on where you feel most tension, either place the foam roller under your shoulders or arm pits gently roll upwards and downwards,
For lower limbs
Similar to the upper limbs, upon identifying the region where you are tensest, place the foam roller under that area and gently roll backwards, forwards or side to side until you feel relief.
While foam rolling can be rather painful when you first begin, ensure that you are doing targeting the appropriate areas and rolling appropriately to avoid further injury.
As with all new exercises, if injury occurs or if pain persists, please consult your doctor.
